Schrank8 poster for Michiel Schuurman

To announce the third exhibition of Home Gallery Schrank8 I made this poster. Although I'm quite enjoying myself with this project, I was more nervous than ever. As an inexperienced poster designer and with just as little experience in silk screening, I found it quite a big challenge to make a silk screened poster for the exhibition of silk screened posters by Michiel Schuurman. I hope I did him some justice with the outcome.

Poster is printed in a layer of purple on gray card board. Although quite invisible online, there's a second layer printed with a fine crocodile-like texture of high gloss varnish.

Specifications
- poster 75 x 50 cm
- silk screened in an edition of 55
- printed at Amsterdams Grafisch Atelier (AGA) together with Michiel Schuurman

Lakenhal - Hot Item Card

Lakenhal - Book

The book Stad van verf (City of Paint) gives you delightful stories by author Onno Blom. He brings a city to life over the course of 25 paintings and painters. The stories are a lovely mix of his personal perspective, facts, historical gossip and anecdotes. All to shine a different light on the city of Leiden between 1510 and 2006.

I wanted the book to be a look-book as well as something that would seduce you to start reading. When designing it I was thinking of an old fairy tale book I used to have. I remembered it was a large heavy thick book, loads of white around a block of text, set in large sized typography.

The book is part of a larger project Stad van verf in which the author Onno Blom combines his forces with the Leiden's local news paper and Musem De Lakenhal.

Specifications
- commissioned by Musem de Lakenhal, Leiden
- published by HDC-Media
- hard cover book, with book marker, 21.5 x 28 cm
- 256 pages, full color
- printed by Drukkerij Slinger, Alkmaar

W139 - Book

These books were designed for W139 art space. In the briefing for this assignment the director Gijs Frieling asked me to design a small gesture, not a big book. I chose thin paper to keep the volume of the book modest. All is bound in a floppy linen cover.
I hand-dotted all the photographs that represent the exhibitions into illustrations. This way the 60 grams paper is kept free of too much ink. (Also see the sketches.)

- Le Madison, Annja Krautgasser

- Colored, Jonas Ohlsson / Ontferm U, Maartje Folkeringa

- The Breakers, Zoro Feigl

For the content of the book I was given a chaos of texts for exhibitions, invites, press releases, interviews and letters that were written in the four years that Gijs Frieling was director of W139. We decided to put an editor to work and rearrange these texts into an encyclopedic A-Z of all the events, articles and people. The book includes 167 portraits.

Specifications
- commissioned by W139 and Gijs Frieling
- made possible with supportive effort by Femke Gerritsma, Marleen van Weerd and Hendrik Folkerts
- book (
12 x 17 cm) with soft linen cover and gold colored imprint
- NL (300 copies) and EN (200 copies)
- 174 pages, with
12 full color and 169 black & white illustrations

Show & Tell - invites

Lately I'm into promoting my friends. Although they don't really need my promotion because they are great inspirational designers, I try to find good reasons to do it.
For the short period I have been teaching the first year's students at the HKU, I invited Michiel Schuurman, Simon Wald-Lasowski and Bart de Baets to show their work to the students. These designers all have been my class mates and I thought it was nice to show (off with) how different we all turned out.

- mini posters (A4)
- invites (A5)
- laser and inkjet print
- editions of 50

- Next time I'll be a better girl and ask a student to design the announcements. For now it were spontaneous plans which left me with no time for didactic thoughts.

Phantom City - a photo novel - Kim Bouvy

Kim Bouvy had been working on her book for over two years before I got involved. She had a clear vision of what it was supposed to become: a novel, not a picture-book. We chose for a rigid classification to divide her photography, found footage and text. With the beautiful lithography and print work by Calff&Meischke Printers it all came together in a clear, simple, but beautiful pocket-size novel. The book tells a story about the history, presence and possible future of the main character of the book: a city. It ends with a photo index revealing the identity of the city Rotterdam.

"Outside, the city has ceased to exist. From this point on, I will be able only to evoke it from my memories, to see it in these few photos I managed to bring with me. When my own memory eventually abandons me, this collection of yellowing newspaper cuttings, crumpled snapshots and torn out pictures will continue to remind me of how the city was before everything changed. From this dusky non-space with no night or day, I shall attempt to constantly reconstruct my city out of ever less clearly defined memories."

- 12 x 19 cm, 276 pages
